Albuquerque Has Its Own Claim on Jim Morrison
Most Doors tributes could happen anywhere. This one lands differently in Albuquerque.
As a young boy traveling through New Mexico with his family, Jim Morrison came upon a highway accident — Native American men dying on the road. He said for the rest of his life that the souls of those dying men entered him in that moment. He returned to it in interviews, in his poetry, and in his lyrics, including the opening line of “Peace Frog”: Indians scattered on dawn’s highway bleeding. That image shaped Morrison’s mythology more than almost anything that happened to him in Hollywood — and it happened on a New Mexico road.
Seeing The Doors’ catalog performed here, on Central Avenue in Nob Hill, is a different experience than seeing it in Los Angeles.
