Facing Scars is a new Albuquerque-made series about domestic violence, and its pilot episode premieres at the Historic Lobo Theater on Thursday, September 24, 2026. Amateur boxing champion Michele struggles in the aftermath of fleeing an abusive marriage — the series follows her, and explores the forms domestic violence takes and the effects it leaves on the people who survive it. A Q&A panel with the filmmakers follows the screening.

Doors open at 5:30 PM and the screening begins at 6:30 PM in the historic main theater. General Admission is $8 and Students and Veterans are $5, with no booking fee — tickets are sold through Zeffy, so the full ticket price goes to the cause. Proceeds from ticket sales are donated to S.A.F.E. House (Shelter and Family Empowerment), the Albuquerque shelter that is the largest provider of intimate-partner domestic violence services in New Mexico and the third largest in the country. Photo ID is required at the door.

Facing Scars is directed by Dana Chisholm, an Empowerment Films production in collaboration with Katharsis Media, Fire Garden LLC and Flyboyz. It stars Jenna Parker, Jeffrey Candelaria and Paul Lucero, under the tagline “You can’t keep a good woman down.” Empowerment Films is an Albuquerque organization that works to end domestic violence by bringing schools, communities and families together around age-appropriate film.

Content advisory: this film contains violence and strong language and is not a child-friendly film. The producers advise viewer discretion, do not intend it for children under 13, and ask that attendance by anyone under 17 be at a parent’s discretion.
